Classical Music

Douglas E. Johnson
10 Miniatures for Solo Guitar - commissioned & performed/recorded by Paul R. Stern

1993 Douglas E. Johnson

"...Mr. Stern ranks among the best of the classical guitarists performing on the international scene...not the 'best guitar recital' but the best recital in any medium."

Arthur Corra, PhD.; Conductor and Chairman,
 Music Department, ISU

Mr. Stern's large repertoire includes concert pieces extending from renaissance to modern times. In 1979 he was selected by Hi Fidelity / Musical America magazine as "one of the young musical artists to watch." His performances of the Bach lute music have been featured at the Birmingham Bach Festival, Harvard University, and broadcast by PBS radio programs.

Intrasections I for electronic tape

$5 (+P&H)

Johnson composed Intrasections I for electronic tape for the 1999 Illinois State University Digital Arts Festival.

It was given a premier on the Cybermusic concert, March 17, 1999, as a tribute to Edgard Varese and his Poeme Electronique.

Here is a brief description of the work:

Intrasections I for electronic tape emerges gradually from an eternal space, slowly builds opposing sound masses into a rigid and mechanistic section, and dissolves back into the same eternal space. The middle section accompaniment returns in the closing section and then disintegrates, leading to a codetta where the main theme emerges to be heard clearly for the first time. Intrasections I closes with a sense of profound understanding and metaphysical wonderment. The main theme is derived from the first four notes of the vocal line in Gentle Giant's Edge of Twilight.

Johnson composed Voce' for Solo Voice for the 2001 Illinois State University Digital Arts Festival.

It was given a premier on the Cybermusic concert, March 27, 2001.

A brief description of the work follows:

Voce' was composed in March 2001 for solo voice and minimal fx. The work was edited in Sonic Foundry's Vegas software and inspired by the life of an unborn child in the womb of its mother. A sense of spirituality and a strong desire for life is reflected in the work, juxtaposed with a meditative quality. Voce' is a three-movement work with no breaks between movements.

Want a taste of avant-garde industrial rock and post-experimental pop, offset by an attitude and thought-provoking poeticism?

CiViLiAN has worked on several releases and is currently working in the studio, chiseling at a full-length CD.

No Sax or Violins features: Prelude and Resurrection of the Mountain King, Abortion, and Crosstalk.

Prelude and Resurrection of the Mountain King is a neo-industrial remake of Edward Grieg's Ase's Death and In the Hall of the Mountain King. It was also released on the CD: Return of the Mountain King - A Tribute to Savatage by Dwell Records, originally produced by Progressive Arts Music. Special thanks to Eric Hoffman!

Abortion was originally released on a demo cassette with Crosstalk. It is only available on No Sax or Violins.

Crosstalk is available on the PAM comp CD: Up From the Underground, which also includes: Cindy Tells Me, Opposite Earth, Without Warning, Tiles, The Quiet Room, Psycho Scream, and 'Closet Classics' by Tempus Fugit and Fatal Sin. Thx to Eric at PAM!

Here are more comments about the tunes
that may help...

"CiViLiAN is a visionary lyricist, a minstrel ahead of his mime, an actor exiting his own script while redirecting his thoughts, a person just like you -- but completely different..." "...what you will hear could be described as a kind of avant garde / post-modern / pop-rock / fusion music, but having said that, no label accurately conveys what you'll experience with your heart and mind when you listen closely to...CiViLiAN."
 DE Johnson, Raconteur Productions

"CiViLiAN ROX! And it's weird, too...I like it!!

The Gone Orchestra
No Price Too High
$12 (+P&H)

"If the cover of The Gone Orchestra's No Price Too High is a tour brochure, the quicker minds will no doubt understand that they are in for a strange journey...

The Gone Orchestra have their own agenda and their music is an unpretentious, wandering exploration of jazz, blues, world beat and noise (I'm sure I missed something), putting to use everything from djembe and lap steel to theremin, "electronics" and sampling that could best be described as experimental neo-jazz."
Geoff Earl (The Rocket)

"Just when you think you've heard every possible stylistic variation under the progressive umbrella, along comes a band that leaves you scratching your head...the eclectic instrumental brew includes keyboards, bassoon, trombone, djembe, trumpet, electronic effects and theremin. The singer, Jamie Price, sounds straight out of the 1930's."
John Collinge (Progression Magazine - April 1999)

"Standards like Billie Holiday's Miss Brown to You and Duke Ellington's Solitude, though almost traditional on a first listen, are imbued with subtle electronic effects...it takes a balancing act to pull it all together, but the eleven musicians that make up The Gone Orchestra, hailing from diverse rock, classical, jazz, and experimental backgrounds and ranging from ages nineteen to seventy, seem capable of almost anything."
Rolf Semprebon (Anodyne Magazine - March 1999)

Known as 'the four piece wrecking machine from Long Island, NY (USA),' KLANK forced their way on to the modern techno-industrial music scene with their own brand of "Electro Groove Metal."

Their debut album, Still Suffering, was released on Tooth & Nail in 1997 and garnered widespread attention. Downside (the single from Still Suffering) stayed on the CMJ Top 40 charts for 18 weeks and was added to over 170 radio stations nationwide.

numb...KLANK's new release from
Progressive Arts Music is due out in October 1999.

"KLANK has created a sound all their own with a tasty blend of heavy guitars, keys, samples, and live / programmed percussion. Thoughtful lyrics that reflect a 'longing for inner peace' are mixed with 'mood swings, bitterness, and despair'..."
 DE Johnson, Raconteur Productions

KLANK says, "We write music that we feel comes from deep down inside and a lot of people can relate to them because they are all based on real life situations and emotions. We all deal with issues in our lifetime and here is our chance to vent those issues." KLANK is Darren 'Klank' Diolosa (ex - Circle Of Dust & Argyle Park) on vocals / guitars / keys, Pat Servidio on guitar / keys / programming, Danny Owsley on guitars / backing vocals and John "JMF" Zaletel (ex - Great Kat) on drums / percussion.
